What was the only part of the United Kingdom to be visited by the late Elvis Presley? The answer is Prestwick airport in March 1960, albeit only to change planes when on his way home from military service in Germany.
Prestick Airport is one of two Glasgow airports, with roots going back to the first world war.
The airport has been used variously as a commercial airport, a military base, and aircraft manufacture and testing. The present terminal building was opened in 1964, by Her Majesty the Queen Mother.
Prestwick is a very important centre for airfreright for the whole of Scotland and Northern England. Considerable volumes are freight are sent to North America, Europe, and other parts of the world.
Nearly two and a half million passengers pass through Prestwick Airpoort each year, mainly leisure and package holiday makers. Ryanair is by far the largest operator at Prestwick, with Agean Flights, Aer Arran and Wizzair the other scheduled airlines. Many charter and travel firms organise flights from Prestwick to holiday destinations.
The terminal building has a limited number of shops, bars and food outlets. There are plans to improve and expand the airport in the coming years.
